1. What type of surrogacy situations does SPCT handle?
SPCT handles gestational surrogacy arrangements using either the wife's egg or a donor egg. We do not facilitate traditional (AI) surrogacy arrangements.
2. What are SPCT's general requirements for becoming a surrogate mother?
A potential surrogate mother must...
* be at least 21 years of age.
* be in overall good health.
* be a non-smoker.
* have previously given birth to at least one child and experienced a healthy pregnancy(ies) in the past.
* not be currently receiving government assistance.
* have a strong support system.
* undergo both a physical and psychological evaluation.
3. What type of screening is required?
Potential surrogates are required to undergo a psychological evaluation and a physical evaluation. In addition, a home visit with the surrogate and her partner and/or support system will also be required.
4. Will I be compensated??
Yes, you will be compensated. The amount of compensation often varies, depending on the situation. If you become pregnant with multiples, your fee will increase. You will also be reimbursed for any surrogacy related expenses such as mileage, childcare, maternity clothes, etc.
5. What can I expect to happen if I decide to apply to SPCT? Can you give me a general step by step overview of the process?
* Call or email SPCT to request an application.
* Complete your application and return it to SPCT.
* Complete a phone interview with an SPCT social worker.
* Undergo a psychological evaluation.
* Complete a home visit.
* Discuss profiles of intended parents who match your criteria with social worker.
* Once a tentative selection has been made by both the intended parents and surrogate, a meeting facilitated by an agency reprentative is arranged.
* If, after the meeting, both parties have approved the match, you will go for your physical evaluation and bloodwork.
* Work out the contract details and sign the contract.
* Begin IVF cycle and await pregnancy test!
6. What can I expect from my initial meeting with the intended parents?
The first meeting is a lot like a first date. Although it is an exciting time for all, most surrogates as well as intended parents admit to being a little nervous. It is perfectly natural to be a little anxious, but, try not to worry. Once you meet and start getting to know each other, you will feel more at ease .
The meeting can take place at the agency or in a public place such as a restaurant or a park and it usually lasts a couple of hours. By the time you reach this point, you will already know that your potential couple shares your views on important issues such as pregnancy termination, selective reduction and contact. Therefore, the first meeting can be devoted to simply talking and getting to know each other. This will help you and your potential couple to determine if your personalities are a good match. If you have any questions for your potential couple, we recommend that you write them all down and bring your list with you to the meeting.
